Theoretical Ethics, Values and Behavioral Matters Component

The purpose of this part of the TransPagan Consensus survey is to determine the approximate range of beliefs on various Theoretical Ethical, Behavioural and Value issues within the Pagan Community.

It may be useful to open Garden of Life's Definitions Page in a separate window for help on any of the terms in this survey. We have tried to make this survey and our definitions page as NeuroLinguistically Neutral as possible, but as modern physics teaches us, that only goes so far.

That the question "What is the Good" is of extreme importance which should be analyzed with all the tools at our disposal, and that such study is in and of itself beneficial to any sentient's development.

I believe that there are certain actions which are always wrong or always obligatory regardless of circumstances although such actions must be carefully defined, for example: "murder is always wrong" or "it is always keep one's word". Noting that the definition of the word murder in the English language, excludes instances of killing, in self defense or to protect others (particularly, though not necessarily limited to those for which you have specific responsibility). Or that one's "word" occurs when a serious promise and commitment to a certain action or inaction is made.

I believe that the controversy about the relative value of "ends" and "means" (whether the "ends justifies the means", or "the method is most important") in determining ultimate importance and standards by which to evaluate actions, is a false argument because both are true in various Ethical situations and a different times or phases of situations. There is no legitimate way to state whether the "result" or "process" is paramount.

I believe that exploitation is wrong, though the term must be delineated closely. To exploit someone or something is to make use of him, her, or it for one's own ends, without returning adequate value or by playing inappropriately on some weakness or vulnerability in the object of such exploitation.

I believe that there is a best and most appropriate path of action for each Individual, that determining and pursuing this path is one of the most important things that each Individual may do. There is no natural conflict between the path of any one Sentient and that of any other Sentient, and that any such apparent conflict indicates a failure to determine and follow either or both of said Sentients' most perfect paths.

I believe that benevolent behaviour is beneficial to the development of all sentients. Benevolent behaviour being defined as possessing a desire for the good of others and a willingness to act to effectuate such good. Benevolence, may take many different forms for instance including but not limited to: compassion, mercy, kindness, and/or generosity.
