The Year of the Lady 11368, Gemmini/Delphinus (or ~May/June/July 2002 ev) Revision

Theoretical Ethics, Values and Behavioral Matters Component

The purpose of this part of the TransPagan Consensus survey is to determine the approximate range of beliefs on various Theoretical Ethical, Behavioural and Value issues within the Pagan Community.

Special Note:
In this survey subsection we are not repeating the identifying questions that are on the introductory page of the survey, other than the name, identifying phrase and eMail address. With this information we will be able to attach any supplementary sections that you submit to your completed Introductory section response. If you got to this part of the survey without seeing the introductory page, please return to it by clicking here:

TransPagan Consensus Survey Introduction

It may be useful to open Garden of Life's Definitions Page in a separate window for help on any of the terms in this survey. We have tried to make this survey and our definitions page as NeuroLinguistically Neutral as possible, but as modern physics teaches us, that only goes so far.
We also have position papers on some of the discussed issues, if you're interested in our take on them. We have tried to separate our own teachings, forms and techniques from the wording of the survey questions. We may provide links next to some of the questions, that you can click on if you want to see our comments on that issue.

Theoretical Ethics Section

I believe it is proper and valid for sentients to discuss, determine and postulate Ethical positions and systems.

Comments:

I believe that an Individual's preliminary determination of an Ethical stance does not violate the principal of Free Will.

Comments:

I believe that knowing what one thinks is Ethical enhances one's ability to apply Free Will.

I assign primary importance to the ideas and beliefs that I hold about ethical, value and/or behavioural matters, rather than my actions.

Comments:

I strive to balance my ideas/beliefs actions/practices in ethical, value and/or behavioural matters, so that they are as congruent as possible.

Comments:

I believe that each Individual sentient has unconditional right to hold any thoughts about ethical, value and/or behavioural matters that they so choose, without interference from any Individual or group. If the thoughts are acted upon, they become the concern of all affected persons.

Comments:

I believe that, barring total isolation, each Individual sentient's actions in ethical, value and/or behavioural matters, must be negotiated between the Individual and any affected other Individuals and/or groups.

Comments:

I believe that ethical, moral and value driven behavioural matters are inculcated in Individual sentients by the societal group or groups that they are immersed in.

Comments:

I believe that ethical, moral and value driven behavioural matters reflect an Absolute Universal Reality and/or Divine Force.

I believe that goodness, is a natural quality existing throughout and at all levels of the Cosmos.

Comments:

I believe that while the quality of goodness doesn't lend itself to definition easily, it is perhaps approached most readily by intuition. That the question "What is the Good" is of extreme importance which should be analyzed with all the tools at our disposal, and that such study is in and of itself beneficial to any sentient's development.

Comments:

I believe that a study of 'the nature of the Cosmos' is an essential prerequisite to any determination of 'how things should be', that being conversant with the nature and components of the perceivable Cosmos is vital to any formulation of a code of Ethics, Values or Behavioural standards for Individuals and Societies.

Comments:

I believe that the Cosmos, that branch of the MultiVerse of which it is possible for us to be cognizant, is one thing, and not two or twenty things, that the artificial division of it, other than for the purpose of study, and the belief that these artificial divisions have any reflection in Truth, are among the most damaging concepts ever to surface in Human Culture.

Comments:

I believe that there is a morally significant difference in degree of culpability incurred by taking a particular action versus that incurred by a corresponding failure to act, even if both have the same outcome.

Comments:

I believe that there are certain actions which are always wrong or always obligatory regardless of circumstances although such actions must be carefully defined, for example: "murder is always wrong" or "it is always keep one's word". Noting that the definition of the word murder in the English language, excludes instances of killing, in self defense or to protect others (particularly, though not necessarily limited to those for which you have specific responsibility). Or that one's "word" occurs when a serious promise and commitment to a certain action or inaction is made.

Comments:

I believe that there is a whole range of actions, where it is important to consider circumstances, consequences and/or in some cases even cultural context in determining the right course of action.

Comments:

I believe that there is a crisis of Human culture, perhaps the greatest crisis that has or will come, but that if Humanity recovers from and indeed masters it, such crisis will prepare Humanity for rebuilding, in a more perfect way, a consensus culture which will mark Humanities maturity.

Comments:

I believe that the controversy about the relative value of "ends" and "means" (whether the "ends justifies the means", or "the method is most important") in determining ultimate importance and standards by which to evaluate actions, is a false argument because both are true in various Ethical situations and a different times or phases of situations. There is no legitimate way to state whether the "result" or "process" is paramount.

Comments:

I believe that exploitation is wrong, though the term must be delineated closely. To exploit someone or something is to make use of him, her, or it for one's own ends, without returning adequate value or by playing inappropriately on some weakness or vulnerability in the object of such exploitation.

Comments:

I believe that there is a best and most appropriate path of action for each Individual, that determining and pursuing this path is one of the most important things that each Individual may do. There is no natural conflict between the path of any one Sentient and that of any other Sentient, and that any such apparent conflict indicates a failure to determine and follow either or both of said Sentients' most perfect paths.

Comments:

I believe that benevolent behaviour is beneficial to the development of all sentients. Benevolent behaviour being defined as possessing a desire for the good of others and a willingness to act to effectuate such good. Benevolence, may take many different forms for instance including but not limited to: compassion, mercy, kindness, and/or generosity.

I believe that in some extreme cases it is possible for Sentients to choose to act contrary to what would best fit their objectives (what they take to be their 'good').
